Thomas has always felt like an outsider due to his homosexuality, which back then was fraught with harsh and unfair judgment - not to mention punishable by law. Not that he doesn't deserve it with all the trouble he likes to create for others, but loneliness can do many things to a person - even make them start hating themselves. With Jimmy gone and Baxter no longer his ally (though she does seem to care about his well-being at least a little when she finds him taking drugs, Mr. To me, it might as well be titled Who You Are and What You're Doing Is Wrong, So Change!Įven though we're only a few episodes in, this has proven to be a bit of tough year for Thomas. (This is Downton Abbey, after all, and we keep such personal matters hush, hush.) But there's just something about the name Choosing Your Own Path that gives the whole situation a rather sinister vibe. Of course, nothing has been confirmed yet. But why? What is it that Thomas needs to go do and how does it involve this Choosing Your Own Path group and why does he come back looking so ill? While some of you may be quick to assume Thomas is involved in some sort of money-making scheme, I have a bad feeling this has less to do about money and more to do with Downton's under butler trying to change some aspect of himself… like his sexual orientation. Of course, Carson allows him to go without question, but we all know better. No sooner is this conversation over with that Thomas requests to take some time off on account of his father being very sick and wanting to see him before he dies. It's there that we see Thomas, who clearly does not want to be overheard, call someone in response to an advertisement he saw in the paper that's called Choosing Your Own Path. Carson if he can use the phone for a personal matter, to which Carson obliges. (Bless him.) But usually when he's concocting some sort of plan, we as the audience, are normally in on the scheme… until now, that is.Įarly on in last week's episode, Thomas asks Mr. Now, of course, Thomas is known for his many mischievous deeds. However, my main interest in last Sunday night's episode began and ended with Thomas' unusually mysterious behavior and this week, it only got worse when Barrow appeared rather sick and took some kind of drug upon his return to work. Green murder mystery that appears to be picking up some steam (finally). Most of the time our attention is drawn to Lady Mary's love life or the whole Mr. Honestly, I'm too pleased with how this year wrapped up to get into the nitty-gritty of what this means for next season. When you're dealing with a large cast like the one on Downton Abbey, it's sometimes hard to give everyone their own compelling storyline. (Well, not that silly.) How viable are these two as a couple though? Considering how quickly things happened, that remains to be seen. Carson and Hughes have always gotten along and obviously care for each other quite a lot, but their roles in the house have meant that they don't always see eye to eye. One of the great things about Downton is that I don't feel silly saying that. These are two good people, who deserve each other and all of the happiness in the world. It's certainly not traditional for a couple to jump straight from holding hands at the end of season 4 to buying a house as an engaged couple, but I'm not going to question it. No, I'm not talking about that door that closed in front of Bates and Anna on its own. So I'm obviously burying the lead here, probably because I'm still processing the big final twist of the episode. Go figure. "You are clever, kind, and resourceful, and I wish to put it on record now that we are lucky to have you in the family," he tells her. Sinderby now sees the worth of having someone nice and smart married to his son. (Lord Grantham's "Oh, crikey" was perfect.) Everyone gets out of the situation unscathed, and in the case of Rose, she's honestly better off than she was before. Thinking on her toes, Rose greets Diana as her friend and convinces Mary and Robert to do the same. That shoe was Diana Clark, the mother of Daniel, Sinderby's illegitimate son, who arrives after receiving a letter she thinks is from the boy's father, telling them both to come over. At least she was still around to save Lord Sinderby's butt when the other shoe of Barrow's scheme fell. If the events of the finale made anything clear about the future of the show, it's that Downton Abbey will be a less joyful place if Rose does indeed move to New York with Atticus for his new job.
